Why You Need Both Vitamin C and Retinol

5 minute read

Two of the most powerful ingredients you can use in a skincare regimen are Vitamin C and Retinol. Both are potent actives that reduce signs of aging but they work to improve your skin in very different ways. And while it’s important not to overload your skin with too many active ingredients, these two actually work best in tandem.

How Does Vitamin C Work?

This multitasking vitamin is one of the keys to healthy, glowy skin. It works as an antioxidant to fight against the damage caused by nasty free radicals, which are spurred on by environmental stressors and pollution. In addition to protecting the skin in this way, it helps to reduce and prevent the impacts of exposure to UVA, UVB, and blue light from devices.

Vitamin C is also a wildly proven brightening ingredient thanks to its ability to mitigate melanin production, which can cause dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. So the more you use Vitamin C—along with sunscreen—the more radiant your skin will look!

How Does Retinol Work?

Clinically proven to smooth and firm skin, Retinol is a powerhouse ingredient that is derived from Vitamin A. Like Vitamin C, Retinol does a lot of help even skin tone and improve radiance however it does so through a different method of action. Retinol works by speeding up cell turnover - which is critical as we experience hormonal transition because our cell turnover natural declines. By boosting cell turnover, skin is continually creating healthy, fresh skin cells and as a result the ingredient visibly smooths fine lines, minimizes pores and improves skin texture. It also improves the production of collagen and elastin to maintain firmness.

If you've never used Retinol before, in order to avoid irritation and dryness, Dermatologists recommend adding it into your regimen once a week, then gradually increasing the frequency as your skin adjusts. It’s also incredibly important to apply it only at night and to wear a high quality, non-chemical sunscreen during the day as Retinol can increase your risk of sunburn and sun exposure can render the ingredient ineffective.

Still worried about irritation? Many women have tried Retinol and felt the side effects did not warrant the benefits, but the truth is - not all Retinol products are created with the safety of your skin in mind. If formulas are too potent (yes - too much of a good thing is bad!), not stable, or don't use high-quality ingredients, irritation can be more intense. Using Retinol products that include nourishing oils and skin soothers not only helps offset irritation, it also increases radiance and moisture.

How Do They Work Together?

Adding both Vitamin C and Retinol into your regimen might sound like a lot for your skin to handle, but the two superstar ingredients are considered the "gold standard" in skincare and make for the perfect AM/PM duo.

Vitamin C works best when applied during the morning since it fights off environmental aggressors that we are inevitibly exposed to everyday. And Retinol is best applied at night as it works best with your body's natural overnight recovery process and needs to be applied during a timeframe where sun exposure is not a risk.

So while their benefits are incredible on their own, when you incorporate both you turn up the benefits and when used consistently, you will absolutely experience skin that is brighter, firmer, and healthier.

What Makes EVER's Vitamin C and Retinol Different?

There are dozens of Vitamin C and Retinol products on the market, so why EVER?

Simply put, just because a product SAYS it contains an ingredient doesn't mean it actually contains that ingredient at potent doses or in a stable formula that keeps the actives effective overtime. Vitamin C and Retinol are tricky ingredients - they are notoriously unstable and require special formulation to maintain potency and safety. We take that seriously because stability and potency MATTER.

We use a potent 10% THD Vitamin C and an oil-soluble Retinol that are superior in both their potency and stability. Additionally, both of these ingredients are more stable in oil, not water, so the base of our formulas is created with a blend of nourishing botanical oils that maintain stability of the formula while also infusing more benefits into the skin.

And while we love Vitamin C and Retinol, we know there are many ingredients that boost performance and we wanted to create a formula that delivered transformative results - not the status quo. That's why we added Caviar Lime in our Daytime Brightening Serum for added smoothing benefits and Peptides into our Overnight Facial Oil for a double-dose of firmness. The result? Two standout products that deliver above and beyond results for women experiencing the hormonal changes of their late 30s, perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.
